Camino Francés Stage 4
The longest day in Galicia. A steep climb out of Portomarín leads onto rolling farmland that runs the rest of the way, through a string of hamlets with hostels and little else, to Palas de Rei — named for a royal palace once said to have stood nearby. [Along the way] - Gonzar — church and hostel right on the Way, at the top of the first climb - Castromaior — Romanesque church beside the remains of a hill fort - Vendas de Narón and Os Lameiros — the chapel of San Marcos among centenarian oaks - Ligonde — cemetery niches facing the road; the hostel is at A Eirexe just after - Lestedo — a hostel with stables for horses stands on this stretch [Stage details] Start: Portomarín · End: Palas de Rei 25.1 km · about 5 h 55 min · difficulty medium [Good to know] - The Romanesque church of Vilar de Donas, a former priory of the Order of Santiago, is a short detour off the Way. - Os Chacotes recreation area and the Pilgrim Pavilion sit just before Palas de Rei.
