Simien Trek
The standard walk into Simien Mountains National Park, along the escarpment that drops away from the Ethiopian highlands in a wall of cliffs and pinnacles. From the park town of Debark the route climbs onto the plateau and follows the rim east through the campsites at Sankaber, Geech and Chennek — gelada baboon country, and the only place the walia ibex lives. [Route details] Start: Debark · End: Chennek 47.1 km · west to east · 2,807 m to 4,051 m Three walking days: Debark–Sankaber 22.0 km, Sankaber–Geech 12.1 km, Geech–Chennek 12.6 km [Good to know] - A park permit, a scout and usually a guide are required; both Sankaber and Chennek can also be reached by road, so many visitors drive one leg. - This is a recorded walk from January 2011, not a mapped route — OpenStreetMap has no route for the Simien trek. The same walker's Imet Gogo day loop from Geech is published separately. - The walk back out to Debark and the continuation east to Ambiko and Ras Dashen are not included; the return retraced much of the way in. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not from the recording.
