Honolulu Marathon

Out along the south shore of O'ahu and back, starting in the dark at five in the morning to get the field moving before the heat. It runs past Waikiki, around the seaward side of Diamond Head, out to Hawai'i Kai and back to Kapi'olani Park. [Route details] Start: Ala Moana Boulevard · Finish: Kapi'olani Park 42.35 km · climb 93 m [Along the way] - Waikiki in the dark, with the fireworks at the start still going - Diamond Head Road, the first climb, at about 10 km - The Hawai'i Kai turnaround, then the same road back [Good to know] - Run in mid-December. There is no time limit and no qualifying standard, which is why it draws a very large first-marathon field. - Humidity, not gradient, is what makes it hard.
