Malerweg Stage 2
The Malerweg — the Painters' Way — loops 116 km through the Elbe sandstone of Saxon Switzerland, laid along the viewpoints that drew Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich. Stage 2 of 8 runs from Stadt Wehlen to Hohnstein. [Route details] Start: Stadt Wehlen · End: Hohnstein Via: Bastei · Rathewalde 10.87 km · 137 m to 333 m · climb 450 m [Good to know] - The Bastei bridge is on this stage, 15.3 km into the trail: the sandstone spans that Romantic painters made famous, checked here at 9 m from the line. - Assembled from the OpenStreetMap relation for the Malerweg and cut at the official stage ends. The Tourismusverband Sächsische Schweiz gives the whole trail as 116 km and 3,600 m of climbing; the assembled line comes to 116.8 km and 3,816 m. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model at 300 m spacing, not recorded on the ground. On ground this gentle a denser sample inflates the climb — the whole trail reads 3,816 m here against the operator's 3,600 m, but 7,313 m if every track point is used.
