Skyline Trail
Jasper's best-known backpacking route, and the one that spends the most time above the trees — about half its length is on open alpine ridge. It runs from Maligne Lake over the Notch, the high col below Amber Mountain, and finishes down the Signal Mountain fire road. [Route details] Start: Maligne Lake · End: Signal Mountain trailhead, Maligne Lake Road 47.0 km · 1,159 m to 2,520 m · climb 1,569 m [Along the way] - Little Shovel Pass, Snowbowl, Big Shovel Pass - The Notch, the high point, around the halfway mark - Signal Mountain fire road, 9 km of steady descent to the finish [Good to know] - Usually walked over three days; the campgrounds need reservations from Parks Canada. - It ends at a different trailhead from where it starts, so it needs a shuttle or two cars. - The Notch holds snow into July and the ridge beyond it has no shelter. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
