Zugspitze via Reintal

The longest way up Germany's highest mountain, and the only one that asks no climbing of you. From the Olympic ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen the path enters the Partnach gorge, then follows the Reintal valley for hours before the ground tilts up to the Zugspitzplatt and the summit at 2,962 m. Usually walked over two days with a night at the Knorrhütte. Checked against the ground: the gorge sits 14 m from the line, Reintalangerhütte 17 m, Knorrhütte 18 m, the summit hut 12 m. Guidebooks give 21–21.7 km and about 2,300 m of climbing. - Via ferrata was weighted out of the routing: a plain shortest path through the Wetterstein finds bolted climbing routes instead of the walk. - The terrain model reads 2922 m at the top against the mountain's 2,962 m. A 90 m grid cannot hold a summit that sharp.
