Leave the Curuxeiras Docks behind and continue along Paseo de la Mariña to San Francisco Church, located between the old quarter and the neoclassical neighbourhood of A Madalena. A Madalena is an excellent symbol of the new town planning that emerged during the Enlightenment period. In the 18th century, Ferrol had become the largest city in Galicia. King Ferdinand VI had decided to set up the Great Navy Yard of Northern Spain here in the middle of the century, making this location the greatest European naval base of its time. It was necessary to house the influx of workers – Ferrol went from 1,500 inhabitants to more than 25,000 by the end of the century. This need gave rise to the neighbourhood of A Madalena: a rectangle made up of six parallel streets intersected at right angles by nine cross streets, with two squares between the centre streets.
