Martigny → Aosta (Stage 3)

83.9 km2886 m

The hard day: 2,000 m of climbing from Martigny to the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard, then a long descent into Italy. The pass is the oldest through-route in the western Alps — Roman, then the hospice with its dogs since 1049 — and Napoleon took an army over it in 1800. [Route details] Start: Martigny (472 m) · End: Aosta 83.9 km · 472 m to 2,471 m · climb 2,885 m [The pass] - Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard 2,469 m at 50 km, then 34 km of descent [Good to know] - The pass road is open roughly June to October; outside that everything goes through the toll tunnel, which bans bicycles. This line takes the pass, not the tunnel. - No cycle route relation covers this leg, so it is routed through the road network. 79% is on quiet roads. - Stage 3 of three from Geneva to Aosta around the north and east of Mont Blanc. The others are published here as Geneva → Chamonix and Chamonix → Martigny. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
