Coloured Canyon
A slot cut through sandstone inland from Nuweiba, two to ten metres wide with walls up to forty metres high. The colours are iron and manganese in the rock — reds, purples and yellows in bands — and the walk runs the length of the canyon from the upper entrance to the lower exit. [Route details] Start: canyon entrance · End: canyon exit 2.42 km [About the missing elevation] - This route is published without an elevation profile, on purpose. The canyon floor is narrower than a terrain model's grid, so the model reads the rim instead of the floor wherever the slot tightens. Sampling it gave 93 m of climb on a walk that descends the whole way — invented, and there is no way to correct it from a model. Better to leave it out than to publish a profile of the cliff tops. [Good to know] - Some sections need scrambling down rock steps; it is done as a guided trip from Nuweiba or Dahab, usually with a 4x4 to the trailhead. - Flash floods are the real hazard here — the canyon is no place to be in rain.
