The Narrows

Zion Canyon at its narrowest, where the walls close to twenty feet apart and rise three hundred metres, and the Virgin River fills the floor from side to side. There is no bank and no trail — the route is the river, waded upstream from the end of the paved Riverside Walk as far as Big Spring, which is where day hikers must turn back. [Route details] Start: Temple of Sinawava · End: Big Spring 7.2 km one way, of which the first 1.5 km is the paved Riverside Walk Walked upstream and back, so about 14.5 km in a day [Good to know] - Most of this is in the water. Closed when the river runs high or flash flooding is forecast, and cold enough most of the year to want a drysuit. - No climb is given. The canyon is narrower than a terrain model's grid, so the model reads the walls rather than the riverbed and would report several hundred metres of climb on a river walk that gains about sixty.
