Calanques — GR 98
The white limestone coast between Marseille and Cassis, walked end to end on the GR 98. The calanques are drowned river valleys — narrow inlets cut into the rock with a strip of beach at the head of each and cliffs standing straight out of the water on both sides. The path climbs over the ridge between one and the next the whole way. [Route details] Start: Callelongue, Marseille · End: Cassis 28.1 km · west to east · 9 m to 453 m A long day, or two with a night in Marseille's southern edge [Good to know] - The massif closes on high fire-risk days from June to September, decided each afternoon for the next day. There is no shade and no water on the route. - The GR 98 continues inland from Cassis to the Sainte-Baume for another 28 km; only the Calanques section is here. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
