Grossglockner High Alpine Road

50.4 km2157 m

A crossing of the Hohe Tauern on the road built for the view, opened in 1935 and still a toll road. From Bruck it climbs to the Hochtor at 2,504 m — a tunnel under the main ridge, on a line people have crossed since the Bronze Age — then drops to Heiligenblut under the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain at 3,798 m. [Route details] Start: Bruck (754 m) · End: Heiligenblut 50.42 km · climb 2,157 m · high point 2,536 m [Along the way] - Ferleiten at 14 km, where the toll booth is and the climbing starts in earnest - Fuscher Törl 2,428 m, then the Edelweißspitze spur just above it - Hochtor tunnel 2,504 m at 34 km, then 17 km of descent [Good to know] - Open May to early November, and it closes at night. There is a toll. - Elevation through the four tunnels is re-cut as the straight line between their portals; a terrain model reads the mountain above a tunnel, not the road inside it. - No cycle route relation covers this road, so it is routed through the road network. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
