Coast to Coast Walk

303.0 km7903 m

Wainwright's line across northern England, from the Irish Sea at St Bees to the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay. It crosses three national parks in turn — the Lake District's fells, the limestone of the Yorkshire Dales, then the heather of the North York Moors — and the tradition is to dip a boot in the sea at each end. [Route details] Start: St Bees, Cumbria · End: Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire 303.0 km · west to east · 3 m to 783 m at Kidsty Pike Usually 14 to 16 days [Three sections] - St Bees → Shap 127 km, through the Lake District - Shap → Richmond 95 km, across the Yorkshire Dales - Richmond → Robin Hood's Bay 122 km, over the North York Moors [Good to know] - Became a National Trail in 2025; before that it was an unofficial route kept up by walkers and the villages along it. - The source marks the documented variants as alternatives and only the main line is here, which is why this measures 303 km against the 315 km usually quoted. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
