Camino Portugués Stage 1
Portugal avenue lead into the historic district of Tui. The route soon comes to the Parador de Turismo, part of the state-owned hotel chain. A milestone indicates that it is 115.4 km to Santiago. The charms of Tui –one of the seven capitals of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia and declared an area of artistic and historical importance in 1967–make their presence felt in every street, alley and passageway of its fine historic district. Santa María Cathedral, with both Romanesque and Gothic elements, presides over the town’s medieval street plan. Bispo Maceira and Baixada or Arrabal de Freanxo streets lead to the church. The route continues along Travesía do Hospital, followed by Concello Square, the convent of the Sisters of St. Clare, and Tide and Antero Rubín streets. Before leaving the city, the route follows Coengo Valiño and Calzada streets to San Bartolomé Park, where is located the preromanic church of the same name.
