New England National Scenic Trail
A ridge walk up the traprock spine of the Connecticut valley and on into the hills beyond it. The rock is basalt tilted on edge by the rifting that nearly split this continent 200 million years ago, which is why a line of cliffs runs north through country that is otherwise flat. [Route details] Start: Berlin, Connecticut · End: Richmond, New Hampshire 422.70 km · climb 9,574 m [Good to know] - The federally designated trail runs Connecticut to the Massachusetts border. This line keeps going on the older Metacomet-Monadnock route into New Hampshire, which is why it measures longer than the 346 km usually quoted. - It crosses roads and private land constantly; there is no wilderness on it, and the ridge is never more than a few hours from a town.
