A level path cut into the cliff above the Pasterze, Austria's longest glacier, running west from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe visitor centre. The Großglockner (3,798 m) stands at the head of the ice the whole way. Marmots are everywhere along it and ibex are common on the slopes above. [Route details] Start: Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,366 m) 2.71 km one way · climb 204 m [Good to know] - An out-and-back: this line is one way, so the walk is 5.4 km all told, about two hours. - Almost level, and much of it runs through rock galleries blasted out of the cliff — 1.08 km of the 2.71, which is why the elevation through them is re-cut as the straight line between their portals. A terrain model reads the mountain above a gallery, not the path inside it; sampled raw it gave 260 m of climb instead of 204 m. - Reached from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, open May to early November. - Rockfall closes sections of it from time to time. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
