Passo dello Stelvio — Prato Climb
The eastern side of the Stelvio, the one on every list — 48 numbered hairpins stacked up the headwall in full view of each other, with the Ortler glacier above. At 2,758 m it is the second highest paved pass in the Alps and the highest in the eastern half of the range. [Route details] Start: Prato allo Stelvio (909 m) · End: Passo dello Stelvio 25.30 km one way · climb 2,188 m · high point 2,769 m [Along the way] - Gomagoi and Trafoi in the trees for the first 15 km - The tornanti begin above Trafoi and are numbered down from 48 [Good to know] - The pass is open roughly June to October and shut by snow the rest of the year. - The climb gains about 1,850 m from bottom to top; the 2,188 m above is the cumulative figure, and the difference is the terrain model catching the hillside between hairpins. - Bormio on the far side and Umbrail from Switzerland are the other two ways up. - No cycle route relation covers this climb, so it is routed through the road network with motorways and the roads that ban bicycles left out. - Elevation is sampled from a terrain model, not recorded on the ground.
